The teacher-training program at The Institute for Jaques-Dalcroze Education is structured to provide a comprehensive experience in the Jaques-Dalcroze Approach. The program is offered by Jack Stevenson, Diplôme Supérieur, and other qualified guest faculty. The program has been registered since 2003 with the College Jaques-Dalcroze, Geneva, Switzerland. It is based in the same traditional values handed down by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, and refined to train and educate the twenty-first century musician and educator.
The examinations require genuine musicality and specific musicianship skills in fixed-doh solfége and ear training, keyboard harmony, piano improvisation for movement, and Jaques-Dalcroze body-movement technique. The pedagogy examinations require a demonstrated love of teaching, and the use of specific pedagogic techniques that are unique to Jaques-Dalcroze educators. The pedagogy exams including student teaching for all three levels of the Certificate Jaques-Dalcroze and the License Jaques-Dalcroze are performed live while in residence at the the Institute. No video recordings are accepted.
The Plastique Animée examinations are designed to allow candidates to demonstrate their creative skill at designing the physical structure (form and analysis) of a composition in space by using the human body as the instrument for interpretation. Remaining true to our core values, the Plastique realization (choreography) is to be performed with live musicians while in residency at the Institute.
Even though there is no term paper required for any of the levels of certification or licensure, specific reading assignments are assigned from the writings of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze and other recognized proponents of the Approach.
