Why choose Bethlehem for your Jaques-Dalcroze Experience?
We offer in-depth, authentic Jaques-Dalcroze teacher-training, provided by sanctioned Jaques-Dalcroze Educators. The Summer Institute is not a program of workshops.
The Institute for Jaques-Dalcroze Education, LLC is not a workshop-type program. We work in cooperation with the College-Jaques-Dalcroze headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and strictly follow an approved curriculum created to provide the necessary experiences and training for aspiring Jaques-Dalcroze educators and practitioners. Individuals who attend the three-week program should be prepared to commit to three to four hours of practice, and seven and one-half hours of classes, daily. Courses in the program include: Pedagogy, Eurhythmics, Solfège, Improvisation, and Plastique Animée.
We provide a support system where an Advanced Certified Dalcroze educator will schedule your practice time and provide guidance and additional instruction from the first day to the last.
At theInstitute for Jaques-Dalcroze Education, Inc. we believe it is essential to have an individual dedicated to guide and support you throughout your Jaques-Dalcroze education. We provide a graduate student who has earned the Advanced Dalcroze Certification to assist you along the way. Because the graduate student participates in all classes, she/he is thoroughly informed and knows how to guide you with your assignments, keep you on task, and help you remain focused to succeed. The graduate student works in close collaboration with Jack so that you never feel left behind or confused. You will always get the help you need when you need it. Your time, energy, and money are just too valuable.
We give highly specialized in-house training so you can successfully pass the Jaques-Dalcroze examinations at any institution.
We offer the latest technology in our beautiful 'cushion-tone floors' in the Eurhythmics studios..
Our new floors are spectacular. The floor looks like beautiful parquet hardwood, but it's better than hardwood. Made in Utah by a family-owned business the 1.25" thick floor ships in 3 X 3 sections and then linked together with a soft mallet. Our installation took one person about 3 hours.
The feel of the floor is a pure comfort. The skin of your feet grips the surface with ease; it's never slick, and never sticky. It is a safe and secure covering for all types of physical activity. Also, the surface is antimicrobial and so easy to keep clean.
The new revolutionary support system under the surface is designed to protect your joints, prevent shin splints, pulled muscles, and back aches. When jumping and hoping, the floor provides relief by giving just a bit and then springing back.
For students not accustomed to a lot of movement over a short time, this floor is a blessing. It is ideal for anyone who wants to care for their body and let the next morning backache and tight caves remain in the past.
We provide "Bed and Breakfast" quality accommodation in a relaxed atmosphere adjacent to the murmuring Monocacy Creek.

The Institute has worked purposely to ensure that every student attending our programs has access to a perfectly in tune and practice instrument with a professional touch and a pleasant tone. For this reason, we have made the Yamaha Clavinova as the instrument of choice for our students and the Yamaha AvantGuard H2 Hybrid for the classroom. These learning and teaching tools stand up to the most challenging atmospheres including all fluctuations in temperature, and humidity. They remain perfectly in tune which is an absolute necessity for a Jaques-Dalcroze student. Furthermore, the pianos are capable of recording so that students can digitally tape their work, and then play it back for a quick analysis. Additionally, we provide a set of earphones with each instrument.
Yamaha Clavinovas and Hybrid Pianos is our brand of choice all our practice rooms.
Throughout the entire experience, we regularly review the examinations and the examination process. These examinations are like no others in higher education and more specifically in the music education field. The Dalcroze exams require spontaneity, creativity, musicality and skill at the moment. It is important that you perform at your best for the jury because in most cases the members of the jury will not know you or your work. We choose and invite the jury members from outside the Institute specifically for that reason.
The requirement of the panel is to deciding if you are qualified and skillful as a teacher, a musician, and as a Dalcrozian. The work of the jury is challenging because each jurist must reach a conclusion that will affect your future and the decision is based on what they hear, see, and experience at one moment in time. That fact alone creates a degree of pressure for the jury but more importantly for you. For that reason, this stress is something for which musical, physical and even psychological preparation is essential.
You must first communicate to the jury that you are relaxed, poised, and ready to perform. Entering the room with confidence and poise is critical to your success, which is why we work to build your musical instincts and your self-assurance, by expanding your musicianship through movement technique, piano skills, ear training, and your improvisation.
There is no getting around having to convince the jury that you think and respond as a Dalcrozian. The first step in the process to demonstrate your understanding of space and how to utilize it with your body. You will need to show poise, balance, good posture, and accurate musical responsiveness. For this reason, we will train your body as if it were a musical instrument. From the very first lesson, we begin working on specific physical techniques starting with a walking technique that will allow you to physically and emotionally experience the music on time, in space, and with the appropriate force (resistance, energy). Furthermore, we work on movement from the body's core or center and discover how it works to affect the arms, legs, hands, feet, and head. We train the ear so that the body learns to respond to sound from the center with subtly and artistry. The physical training not only provides a physical technique but confidence in your ability to reproduce music with your body.
Furthermore, we give you specific techniques that you will carry into the jury room so that you will be ready to succeed at harmonizing melodies, realizing bass lines, and improvising on rhythm phrases. We design every assignment throughout the educational process so you can practice and perfect these techniques with the help of your graduate assistant. Therefore, you will feel prepared because you actually are prepared. There will be no surprises, which really boosts your self-confidence.
